India hikes passport services’ fees

Renewing Indian passports in the UAE will cost almost double from today with the Indian missions in the emirate applying the revised fee structure for passport-related services, excluding processing charges.

The Government of India announced on Friday the hike in the charges taken for various passport-related services. A notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2012 that amended the previous rules of 1980 would come into force from October 1.

Subsequently, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi issued a press statement on Sunday, announcing the details of the new fee structure for the passport services in the UAE, which is home to nearly two million Indian expatriates.

The fee for renewal of ordinary passport has been increased from Dh150 to Dh285, the embassy said. The fee for Tatkaal category has been revised to Dh855 from Dh700. Additional fee charged for 60-page Jumbo booklet has been increased from Dh40 to Dh95. The fee charged in case of the Lost/ Stolen/ Damage category has been revised from Dh505 to Dh570.

Indian Ambassador to the UAE M. K. Lokesh told Khaleej Times that all centres of BLS International that handles Indian passport and visa services in the country would start applying the new fee structure from Monday.

“The Government of India has increased the fee. We have no role to play in this here,” he said.

The ambassador, however, clarified that there is no change in the BLS service fee for processing the passport applications. He added that the missions and the BLS centres would soon be updating the new structure of the fees on their websites.

The last time the Indian passport fees were revised was in 2002. The ministry attributed the hike in the charges to rising costs and comprehensive reforms that it had been engaged in over the past decade.
